We’re kind of looking around to replace our 200k+ mileage Saturn and so I have a Craigslist search for South Jersey stationwagons. It’s amazing how many totally cool vintage cars pop up. For only $4500 this 1964 Dodge could be ours!
A neighbor a few houses down retired “reluctantly” at age 89, one of the last vestiges of fine glasswork that Hammonton was once known for. But this is South Jersey, so don’t call it art!

Quaker musician Jon Watts just left from a nice visit to the Convergent Friends South Jersey HQ (aka my dining room table!). Jon’s become world famous as the musician behind Youtube’s most watched Quaker video, Dance Party Erupts During Quaker Meeting for Worship (embedded below). Good conversation about Quakers inside and out, and the tensions between “what Quakerism is” versus “what it can be” and what that means for outreach. The discussion was too good to interrupt with a video interview, but the sketch we made while talking (above) should give you the gist. You can check out his QuakerPoet blog here. Martin Kelley is a South Jersey Friend with a lov eof outreacha nd ministry and a passion for looking afresh at Friends’ testimonies, language and practices. Before becoming an independent web developer, Martin Kelley worked for Friends General Conference and Friends Journal. He is the publisher of www.quakerquaker.org, a community site for the Convergent Friends movement. He thinks the Quaker message is more relevant than ever but worries we’re not being bold enough to gather George Fox’s and Isaiah’s “great People.”

Elisabeth is a painter and artist who specializes in original acrylic paintings and giclee prints of nature and South Jersey beach scenes. Her existing site was attractive, but it didn’t have online ordering and she wasn’t able to update it herself.
We put together a features list and then went through a round of concept screenshots which I built in Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop (you can see our work here!). Design in hand, I built a customized Movable Type site. A specialized template allows her to enter information about the each piece: medium, theme, price and the URL to it’s image (most of which are hosted on Flickr). Movable Type pulls these together into various category and individual art pages, with automatically-generated Paypal “Buy” buttons for available pieces. We stressed search-engine visibility so there are many categories and they all cross-link with each painting.

A local client from Tabernacle NJ came to me with an interesting project. He’s owned a commercial cleaning company for a number of years and has heard his share of horror stories about the cleaning services clients hired before finding him! This experience led him to write a PDF book about how to hire the right cleaning service. What a great idea and a what a useful book this is for small business owners.
The site’s on a bit of a budget so it’s a simple design, with colors and general look-and-feel borrowed from a site the client likes. Simple editing comes via CushyCMS. When customers click to buy, they are sent to Paypal for the actual transaction and then forwarded to E-Junkie, which provides the automated and integrated PDF download.

The Snake Brothers singing today at the Feast of the Assumption at St Mary’s Malaga. I’m sorry I missed them, Julie says they put chills down her spine. Luckily they’re playing again on the 29th at Estell Manor as part of the Pinelands Folk Arts Festival (PDF flyer). I won’t miss them this time!
I got details for Quaker picnic and outing at the Cape May Zoo at the end of this month:
Salem Quarter has rented Cape May Zoo Shelter C for the day of August 30. We plan to start arriving shortly after 11:00 am after worship at Seaville Meeting. Others are welcome to join us. Bring a picnic lunch. The zoo closes about 5:00. There is no entrance fee, although they do welcome donations. The zoo is shady, so can be comfortable. The animals seem well cared for.
The PPA announced winners for the their photography contest. I didn’t win, but I was beaten out by some great pictures. Below are some, follow the link for all. My Quaker peeps should know that Jaime Cromartie is a member of Atlantic City Area meeting, so at least one of the family made it!

A Flickr user name Oceanpeg just left a comment on one of my recent pictures to let me know that the Pinelands Preservation Alliance is holding a photo contest! I’m a big fan of the PPA and try to get to a few of their events every year but didn’t see this in part because the announcement is only a PDF on their site. Here’s the relevant information about the contest, download the PDF for full rules. The three pictures here are the ones I just submitted.

Tiltshifing works best in hilly areas where you can get up high and get a rolling landscape with good foreground and background. Which is to say it’s damn hard to find something interesting to shoot in South Jersey.
Nonetheless, here’s my favorite picture so far, of a mill race in the long-abandoned Ninteenth Century Weymouth factory. Note this was made with Tiltshiftmaker website, not with this new Adobe Air App, which I’m just trying out now. Via Lifehacker.
